STEM Teaching Award Success for Mrs McDaid

1st Jun 2022

We are delighted to announce that Mrs McDaid has received the Excellence in STEM Teaching - Primary award; everyone at St Patrick's Primary School is extremely proud of her thoroughly deserved achievement. Mrs McDaid received her award at Stormont Parliament Building last week, and will now travel to York for further CPD training.

Mrs McDaid has a passion for The World Around Us and STEM, which she has displayed thoughout her time in our school. It is wonderful to see her receive the recognition for all of her dedication and for instilling a similar interest in the these areas in our children thanks to a wide variety of activities and initiatives. These have included the promotion of science through a science evening and a multitude of science experiments during science weeks; visits from experts including bird experts, beekeepers, and our local red squirrel group; and leading the school to two Eco-School green flag awards.

Mrs McDaid has also successfully obtained substantial grants through Live Here, Love Here, through the Pollinator Project. This has enabled us to further develop and enrich our school grounds, and our children's experiences by planting trees, bulbs, bushes and flowers for pollinators to enjoy.  The children have all gained practical experience and understanding of plant and tree care alongside building their self-esteem, confidence and teamwork skills. These new plants and trees will be an asset to our school, enriching the curriculum for many years to come.

Throughout the school as a staff we can see the positive influence of our eco-activities, practical science investigations and whole school planning. Our children are now so enthusiastic and well informed about Science. This is reflected in the high standard of their written work, discussions and problem solving.

Mrs McDaid is continually improving and planning next steps. Already for next year we hope that our children will take part in the ESB Science Blast. We intend to link with Live Here, Love Here again to purchase metal buckets and spades and litter pickers which will be left at the beach (immediately across the road). We look forward to our future World Around Us and STEM activities, Mrs McDaid; congratulations once again.
