Exploring light in Primary One and Two
Our new topic is Sound and Light and over the past couple of weeks we have been focusing on the light aspect. The children have enjoyed identifying light sources in their environment and illustrating their favourite source. We looked at ‘Street Light’ by Giacomo Balla to identify colours, line and overall techniques used to represent a bright source of light at night. The children were brilliant at discussing all the different colours and images they could see. They then had great fun producing their own collage version of a streetlight picture in small groups. This week we have been reading “Can’t you sleep little bear?” By Martin Waddell. To ‘light up our classroom’ we made our own large paper lanterns, inspired by the book. Today our classroom was turned into the woods and caves from the world of Big Bear and Little Bear. We had planned to take this activity outside but the heavy rain overnight left the ground too soggy for our little bears! Instead the children used tarpaulin, pegs, tables and chairs to create safe and secure caves which would fit their whole group inside. They had great fun using masks to get into character and introducing various stuffed animal friends to each other in their cosy caves. Each group had a light source to light up inside their cave and this allowed them to enjoy books together. A real fun morning was had by all.
