Last Friday we got some very exciting news - St. Patrick’s Primary School in Glenariff has been awarded a prestigious Eco-Schools Green Flag by the environmental charity Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful. The internationally recognised Green Flag is the highest award given to Eco-Schools and symbolises excellence in the field of environmental activity.
We achieved our Green Flag by focusing on three main areas: we had a whole school focus on reducing our use of plastic, including a Waste Free Lunch Challenge, Plastic Smart Campaign and Beach Litter pick; we held our Big Pedal and Walk to School weeks, encouraging active travel and so reducing our impact on the environment; for our third area we increased the biodiversity in the school grounds through development of our pond, meadow, trees, bird houses and so on. Every class engaged in planting and recycling throughout the year.
The assessors stated that this was a "very enthusiastic school who are determined to make a difference and work with the local community - council and businesses.... Superb school grounds ad wonderfully clean."
We would like to acknowledge all those who supported us during this programme, especially Mrs Anne McDaid, our Eco-Schools co-ordinator, Causeway Coast and Glens Council, Causeway Coast & Glens Heritage Trust and the assessors from Keep Northern Ireland Beautiful. We have really enjoyed taking part in Eco-Schools and are very proud of our achievement. Thank you all for your support and assistance throughout our campaign.
