Butterflies, Fairies and Surprises in Primary One and Two

27th May 2021

Primary One and Two have been really busy over the last couple of weeks and have embraced the magic of butterflies and fairies in their garden. They found out all about the life cycle of a butterfly and created some brilliant symmetrical paintings which are now flying around our classroom. Some children also managed to use little objects and pegboards to create patterns on butterfly templates. We listened to the story "Fairy Houses" by Tracy Kane and this inspired us to create our own fairy houses. We first created characters for them and a little fairy door using mixed collage. Then we went on a scavenger hunt in the 'woods' beside the beach and the rocky shoreline to find treasures we thought the fairies might like. It was great fun and there was a lot of excitement when a really special treasure was discovered! When we returned to school, the children worked individually, in pairs and in groups to create a fairy house in our school garden using the natural resources they had found. They added their fairies and mythical characters to it and then left them out for the fairies to discover overnight. What a wonderful surprise they all got when they realised the fairies had loved their houses so much they had all got a little bunch of flowers left inside each one. Next week we hope to create a forever house for our fairies, using shoe boxes, which they can take home.
